Beef with the BMI Scale

I had my physical today. Since I’ve been going to the gym I’ve been avoiding the scale as long as I was seeing positive changes in my body. When I started going to the gym, I was about 125 pounds. You can imagine my surprise this morning when the scale read 148.

It’s Been a While…

I haven’t posted anything fitness related this semester. I’m sorry guys! This whole applying-to-jobs thing got in my way. So I’ll do a quick post on an arm workout I’ve been doing for a little while. Now I also do the chest press machine and the butterfly for my back and chest, these are just my additional dumbbell workouts.

  • Tricep Dips – you can grab a couple of steps and dip yourself with them. Don’t know how to do a tricep dip? Here’s a video!
  • Dumbbell Curls – I alternate arms and go very slowly for the most effective workout. Also, once I finish a set the normal way, I immediately do a second set with my palms facing each other which works the triceps a little more.
  • Shrugs – Hold your dumbbells in each hand and let your arms rest by your side. Lift your shoulders for three, then drop. Repeat.
  • Overhead Lift … Things – Ok, so I don’t know what these are actually called, but this is what it looks like:

For this, I do three sets of ten. You can do any more or any less that you feel comfortable with. Don’t push yourself to do what I say to do if it hurts then sue me. This workout works for me and I’m just sharing it. Working out is different for everyone, so find what works for you 🙂

Bonus:

Military Plank – Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays at the gym are arm and ab days for me, so this move works both. Put your hands together under your chest, then lift yourself up with straight arms. Hold this for 30-45 seconds.

How to Avoid Being Sore

Yesterday was my first day back at the gym in over a month. As you can imagine, I’m feeling it today. I only did arms, no legs, abs, or cardio, so I can actually walk and not hate myself. It’s still inconvenient and I would like to avoid being sore forever when I eventually do legs, abs, and cardio.

I’m Baaaaack!

I said I’d be back after the holidays, and I didn’t lie … I just wasn’t counting on coming back so many days after the holidays! I’ve been sleeping until 10:30 like every day then doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING afterwards. It has been AMAZING. I figure I’ll get some sleep before I have to go back to school. Seven more days!

Biggest Conflict of the Semester

I’m out of coffee.

I have one week left, and I’m out of coffee. Thousands of words left to write, and I’m out of coffee.

Maybe I’m being dramatic, but I don’t have time to run to the store and buy more. With a “to do” list longer than Santa’s, how can I squeeze in 20 minutes to run to the grocery store?

Trim the Tree, Trim the Fat

One of the biggest worries we have, and often ignore, during the holidays is how much weight we’ll gain. Thanksgiving is filled with all healthy foods (turkey, carrots, green beans, etc.), but Christmas is about the desserts. The main meal is never as important as the desserts as there are so many of them! It’s impossible to ignore that beautiful triffle, or the cookies with Santa’s face on them, and that delicious chocolaty thing OH MY! And we justify eating everything in sight (I do it too) because it’s the holidays and you only get to eat this stuff once a year. This isn’t a terribly bad thing, just don’t be shocked on December 26 when you’ve put on 15 pounds.

There is a way to avoid it though. Stay consistent while working out during the holidays. This will significantly reduce the holiday weight gain. Also, it justifies how many cookies you can eat 😉

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

Guess what day it is! If you said hump day, please leave my page now as I am severely disappointed in you. Today is the first day of ABC Family’s Countdown to the 25 Days of Christmas. It’s the Countdown to the Countdown! Sure none of the movies on the list have anything to do with the holiday, but Up is on AND we get a Harry Potter marathon next weekend.

Christmas music is on the radio, TV stations are starting their Christmas lineups, so that means the holiday season is here. That being said, I can officially begin Christmas blogging. Hope you’re ready!

I Did It! Can You?

It’s official! I am a Spartan! AROO!

It was a tough road to get here, but I never gave up. So, how can you become a Spartan? I’d like to help you become one, because the feeling of accomplishment is  amazing prodigious.

I initially wanted to do a Tough Mudder, until I realized that the only ones around me were 10+ miles and most people don’t finish due to injuries. I wasn’t in that great of shape at the time, so I decided to start small. Doing my research, I found a Spartan Race about two hours away from me that was only about 3 miles long. This seemed doable. So I let my boyfriend know, and we agreed to go for it. Until, we learned that by volunteering, you qualify for a free race. This is amazing tremendous news for college students. We signed up to volunteer for the Spartan Race in August.

Gobble Gobble!

The average Thanksgiving meal is over 3000 calories. 3000 CALORIES! You would have to run for over five hours in order to burn it all off. Ain’t no one got time for that. This is why we get in shape before the holidays. Besides, we’re allowed one cheat day every once in a while 🙂

I’ve started a quick routine that I do in my bedroom on days I can’t get to the gym. I like to stay as active as possible in preparation of the race, but I don’t always have time for the gym. This workout does not need any equipment. It’s pretty killer, but you can do it if you try.

Welcome to November!

November is such a fun month! Now that our Halloween Hangovers have gone away, it’s time to think of the holiday season. You can’t hate me for the truth: The holiday season is officially among us!

 

This is an especially busy month for me, aside from all the work I have to do. There’s the best holiday ever Thanksgiving, my Spartan Race in 12 days, and my birthday in 11 days! And not only my birthday, but I have like 10 friends with birthdays within the same week as me.

 

So, for this month, I’ll be focusing on Thanksgiving recipes, homemade crafts for gifting, and exercises (both for the race and that post-Thanksgiving food baby). And I’m starting Christmas as soon as ABC Family’s Countdown to the 25 Days of Christmas starts 😉

 

There’s a lot to be thankful for, so stay tuned!
